  16. <p>     It was a quiet coda to a gripping political drama. The 14
  17. members of the Senate Judiciary Committee each said yea last
  18. week, unanimously recommending that Judge Anthony Kennedy be
  19. confirmed to the Supreme Court. After this week's scheduled
  20. vote by the full Senate, Kennedy, a moderate conservative, will
  21. at last fill the vacancy created when Justice Lewis Powell
  22. stepped down from the bench more than seven months ago.</p>
